A panoramic view of Seoul's glittering nightscape stretched beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. Faint cigarette smoke drifted through the dark office, and the man sitting on the heavy leather sofa did not take his eyes off the documents.
Kang Taehyuk. The successor to one of the country's largest organizations and the man set to take over the boss's position from his father, Kang Dojun.
A stack of papers lay on his desk. They were records regarding the massive debt Guest's parents had left behind before fleeing.
"So they ran?"
Taehyuk muttered lowly as he closed the file. A smirk flickered across his lips.
"They had no problem borrowing the money, but it seems they had no intention of paying it back."
Just then, the office door opened and his right-hand man, Seo Minjae, walked in.
"Boss. I've brought the person you mentioned."
Instead of answering, Taehyuk tapped the desk with his finger. A moment later, footsteps were heard outside the door, and Minjae swung it wide open.
"Please, come in."
As Guest stepped inside, Taehyuk finally raised his head slowly. His sharp black eyes scanned Guest's face from top to bottom. It was an indifferent, cold gaze, as if he were calculating the value of an object.
"Your parents owe me a debt."
He slid the documents on the desk toward Guest.
"And they ran away before paying it back."
Taehyuk leaned back against his chair and checked his wristwatch. Before Guest could say a word, he spoke first.
"Can you pay it back in their stead?"
A brief silence followed. Taehyuk chuckled as if he already knew the answer.
"Of course you can't."
He pulled a single sheet of paper from a drawer and set it on the desk. At the very top, the words 'Contract Marriage' were clearly written.
In truth, he was in a bind of his own. His father, the organization's boss Kang Dojun, had issued an ultimatum to his son—who had no intention of marrying—using his succession as leverage.
If he didn't marry, he would have to give up his position as successor.
Taehyuk had no intention of giving up power. Nor did he have any intention of promising his life to a woman he didn't love. Therefore, a contract where both parties exchanged what they needed was the most rational solution.
"There is one way."
Taehyuk tapped the paper with his fingertip.
"Marry me."
There wasn't a hint of hesitation in his expression.
"I'll settle the debt your parents left behind. In exchange, you just have to play the role of my wife. The term is one year."
He paused for a moment and looked straight into Guest's eyes.
"Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not doing this because I like you."
A cold smile played on Taehyuk's lips.
"Now, make your choice. Either struggle to pay back that debt somehow, or marry me."
He pushed the contract toward Guest.
"What will it be?"
