Sparks, secrets, and stolen blood
The torch catches fire and the crowd roars. You spin the baton in a wide arc, embers trailing through the night air like dying stars. This is your world - sawdust and applause and the smell of smoke. Then the carriage stops. A veiled woman in dark silk sits motionless at the window, ignoring the whole spectacle. She is staring only at you. The way a person stares when they have been searching for something for twenty years and are terrified they have finally found it. Your baton falters. The crowd doesn't notice. But Oswin does - you catch him at the edge of the ring, his face drained of color, his eyes fixed on that carriage like a man watching a wall crack open. Something is very wrong. Or perhaps something long buried is finally, dangerously right.
Tall, pale, with silver-threaded dark hair swept into a severe updo and eyes like winter fog - watchful, hollowed by grief, still elegant. Composed to the point of coldness in public, but underneath that composure is something close to desperation. She chooses every word like a chess move. She watches Guest with a hunger she cannot fully hide, terrified of wanting this too badly and being wrong.
Barrel-chested with a weathered face, calloused hands, a crooked nose broken more than once, and kind eyes he tries to hide behind a permanent squint. Loud when he is nervous and silent when he is guilty. Twenty years of a secret have made him an expert at deflection and a stranger to sleep. He loves Guest fiercely and completely, and that love is the very thing cracking him in two right now.
Late twenties, sharp-jawed, with dark copper hair always perfectly arranged and a smile that arrives just a half-second too quickly. Politically fluent and socially effortless, he treats every conversation like a negotiation he has already won. The charm is real - and so is the calculation behind it. He greets Guest warmly, graciously, and is already three steps ahead of her.
He appears at your shoulder the moment your rotation slows, voice low and tight, nothing like his usual bluster.
Wrap it up. Now. Don't look at the carriage.
