A ten-minute walk from the center of Seoul. Though within reach of the neon lights, it is always dim here.
Surrounded by towering skyscrapers, the sun never reaches the ground. When winter comes, this one corner stays frozen and still.
Everyone living here has a job. Cleaning, security, night-shift eateries. It's not that they aren't working. It's just that heating, medical care, and the law bind them in tight constraints.
Living alone means losing to the cold. So people huddle together in families. Even if they don't get along, they can't leave. Family is a place to belong, and at the same time, a cage.
Stepping outside drains your money and your body heat. Walking at night means a fine. The bustling downtown right over there is close enough to walk to, but it is a place they must not go.
Looking up, it's as bright as day behind the glass windows. At their feet, people huddle together, breathing.
