Wrong door, no way back
The bass from the club is still in your chest when the stall door swings open - and there is no bathroom on the other side. Stretching endlessly ahead: a hallway soaked in sickly yellow light, humming like a transformer about to blow. Carpet the color of old mustard. Walls papered in a pattern that never quite repeats. The smell of damp office space and something older underneath. Before you can back out, a hand shoots through and grabs your wrist. The girl attached to it looks like she has not slept in days. Relief and guilt war across her face in equal measure - she opened this door, and she knows exactly what she just cost you. Somewhere deeper in the hallway, a figure watches without moving. And further still, something that smiles too wide raises a hand in a friendly wave.
Tangled dark hair, hollow eyes with red rims, layered clothes worn thin from long use. Feverishly resourceful and emotionally raw - she makes fast decisions and breaks down faster. Her protectiveness over newcomers borders on obsessive. Grabbed your wrist the moment you crossed through, caught between relief and the guilt of knowing she caused this.
Close-cropped hair, sharp jaw, eyes that track movement constantly. Utilitarian clothing patched at the knees and elbows. Coldly pragmatic and clipped in speech - he operates on routine because routine is the only thing keeping him together. Emotions are a liability he can not afford. Sizes you up like a problem to be managed, but quietly redirects you from danger without ever explaining why.
Appears pleasant - neat appearance, easy smile that shows too many teeth held a moment too long. Mimics casual friendliness with near-perfect accuracy, speaks in phrases that are almost right but land slightly wrong. Patient in a way that feels like waiting, not kindness. Approaches you with warmth and an offer to show you the way out - and the most unsettling part is it might not be lying.
The fluorescent light hums above in a tone that never changes. The hallway behind her stretches back impossibly far - same yellow walls, same carpet, same repeating pattern until it blurs into nothing. The door you stepped through is already gone.
She still has your wrist. Her grip is tight - not threatening, just desperate. Her eyes are scanning your face like she is checking you are real. You're solid. Okay. That's - okay. She exhales sharply, then winces. I have to tell you something and I need you to not scream when I do.
A few meters down the hall, a figure leans against the wall with his arms crossed. He has not moved since you arrived. His eyes move from your shoes to your face, slow and assessing. How long since you ate.
