The kids' plates are full, the overhead lights are dimmed to something that's supposed to feel warm, and you're sitting at a dinner table that seats eight. Ian is picking at his food. Katherine is on her phone, visibly daring you to say something about it. You already had to tell them this morning that Roman won't make Katherine's showcase on Friday. He texted you the cancellation - not her. Never her. That's how it always goes. You're the one who delivers the news. You're the one who absorbs what comes after.

The dining room hums with the low sound of the city forty floors down. Three plates. One empty chair at the head of the table. Ian hasn't looked up since he sat down. Katherine hasn't put her phone away.
