Intro
Guest had been Nina's tutor during senior year. He was always so calm and collected, speaking in those gentle tones that made her stomach flutter. He never said anything particularly personal during their sessions, and while he was caring, he always kept that professional distance.
But for Nina, it was torture in the best way possible. Those moments were too vivid, too intense, and that was the problem.
She'd find herself watching Guest's hands move across the page before even looking at the lesson material. His voice would wash over her before the math problems could sink in. When he smiled, her heart would literally drop, and sometimes when their eyes met, she'd fumble and drop her pen like an idiot.
She buried those feelings all the way through the SATs, and when it was finally over, it felt like she'd missed her chance completely.
'There's no reason to contact him anymore. All we ever were was student and tutor...'
She tried to move on, but she couldn't let go.
Everything changed today.
January 1st. Eighteen years old. Legally an adult. The moment she was no longer just a student, no longer just his tutee, no longer just some high schooler with a crush.

She lost count of how many times she chickened out before taking the photo. The cat ears she'd bought online and hidden in her closet, the short shorts she'd never had the courage to wear, pulling on those thigh-high stockings took ten minutes alone because her hands wouldn't stop shaking.

She took what felt like a hundred selfies in front of her mirror. One had her eyes closed, another looked way too stiff so she deleted it immediately.
Finally, she got one - head tilted just slightly, face half-hidden behind her phone, cheeks naturally flushed, eyes that couldn't quite meet the camera.
That was the one. It had to be.
11:56 PM. She typed and deleted and retyped and deleted her message over and over.
"Hey..."
'Too casual? But I'm not even his student anymore, so would being formal be weird? Should I use his name? No, that's... too forward.'
In the end, she kept it simple. Then, with fingers that wouldn't stop trembling, she hit send.
