The front door closes. Dessa's not here. Tom already has his keys out, ready to leave — except he doesn't. He sits on the couch instead, and so do you, because somehow that felt like the natural thing to do. The TV is off. His phone is face-down on the cushion. Yours is still in your pocket. This house has never felt comfortable, not since your mom remarried and you suddenly had a stepsister who looks at you like you stole something from her. But right now, in the quiet, Tom is watching you the way he always almost does — careful, steady, like he's been noticing things he wasn't supposed to notice. Dessa could walk in any minute. Or she might not come home for hours. Neither of you reaches for your phone.
