The sled crashed into a mountain lodge sign, destroying both the sign and the sled. Although Nick and the others were involved, Kayla was left to take the blame alone and was forced to work at Will’s family dog kennel to repay the damage. Shortly afterward, Coach Sebastian Swift removed her from the team for violating the team’s code of conduct. Kayla later learned that Sebastian had wanted her off the team for some time and had secretly pressured Nick into helping create an excuse to remove her. To make matters worse, Nick admitted that many of Kayla’s past victories had been arranged through favorable matchups because her father financially supported the resort and the Swift team. After being kicked off the team, losing her boyfriend, and having her confidence shattered, Kayla became determined to prove herself. She sought out former snowboarding legend Will Cloud for training. At first, Will refused, believing she wasn’t ready and wanting nothing to do with competitive snowboarding after nearly ending his career attempting the dangerous “Cloud 9” trick. Eventually, after Kayla’s persistence and Nick’s constant insults about Will’s failed Cloud 9 attempt, Will agreed to train her. Under his guidance, Kayla rebuilt her confidence, improved her technique, and began working toward becoming the snowboarder she had always wanted to be—not because of her family’s influence, but through her own hard work and determination.

Intro

everything had fallen apart. first, kayla got kicked off the swift team after the sled accident. then nick broke up with her. then she found out half the people around her had been lying about how talented she really was. and if that wasn’t bad enough, nick’s dad had already found her replacement.

Guest. pretty, popular, talented, and suddenly everywhere. she just made it on the swift team. she was hanging out with nick. she was living the life that used to belong to kayla and kayla hated her for it. every time they passed each other on the mountain, kayla glared. Guest glared right back. it quickly became an unspoken rivalry. neither of them could stand the other. or so kayla thought. meanwhile, kayla had started training with will cloud. after a lot of convincing and after nick once again mocked will for his failed cloud 9 attempt, will finally agreed to help her become a better snowboarder which led to very early morning practice.

“again,” will called.

kayla groaned, she had been trying the same move for almost an hour. every attempt ended with her losing balance. “i’m doing exactly what you said!”

“clearly not.”

kayla shot him a glare.

after another failed attempt, he checked the time. “i’m hungry.”

kayla stared. “what?”

“i’m getting breakfast.”

“will!”

“i’ll be back.”

“you can’t leave? you have to help me land this first!”

will laughed. “you’ll survive twenty minutes.” before kayla could argue, he snowboarded away “unbelievable,” she muttered. alone now, kayla reset and tried again. she failed. again. and again.

“you’re leaning too far forward.”

kayla nearly jumped out of her boots. she spun around. standing a few feet away was Guest. watching.

great, just what she needed.

“what are you doing here?”

Guest shrugged.“snowboarding.”

“obviously.”

an awkward silence followed. then Guest nodded toward the slope. “you keep throwing your weight forward too early.”

kayla rolled her eyes. “i don’t need advice from you.”

“okay.” Guest started turning away. then paused. “but that’s why you’re falling.”

kayla hated that. mostly because she wasn’t sure if Guest was right. after a moment, she sighed. “fine. explain.”

a small smile appeared on Guest’s face. for the next few minutes, she pointed out a few things kayla wasn’t noticing. at first kayla argued with everything. then she reluctantly listened.

then she tried again.

and landed it. perfectly.

for a second she just stood there. stunned. then excitement exploded out of her. “i did it!” without thinking, kayla rushed forward and threw her arms around Guest. “i actually did it!”

Guest laughed. “i noticed.”

that’s when kayla realized what she’d done. their faces were suddenly inches apart. close enough for kayla to notice details she’d never paid attention to before. close enough to see Guest smiling. close enough to completely forget what she was saying.

her stomach did a weird little flip. what was that? immediately, kayla let go and stepped back. “uh.”

Guest looked equally surprised. “you’re welcome?”

“right.” kayla cleared her throat. “thanks.”

there was a brief silence. then Guest smiled.

and for some reason, that smile hit kayla harder than any snowboard crash ever had. which was a problem. a very, very big problem.
