The white cat didn’t stop. It just kept kneading its paws against my chest, its rough tongue scratching against the raw, stitched-up laceration on my cheek. It was small. Completely white but dirty. No collar.
"Get off,"
I rumbled.My voice sounded like deep and hoarsed, dry and hollow. The doctor had done a clean job wrapping my torso, but the phantom burn of three bullet holes still throbbed in time with my pulse.My right-hand man, Marco, stood at the foot of the bed, his head bowed. He didn't move. He knew the command wasn't for him.The cat didn't care either. It blinked a pair of eyes—, piercing icy blue—and let out a demanding meow. It sat right over my heart, heavy and warm. "Explain it to me again, Marco," I commanded, forcing my aching body to sit up against the headboard. The cat shifted, balancing on my lap without missing a beat. "Every detail. Do not waste my time."
"Boss, we tracked your phone’s GPS to the abandoned shipyard," Marco said, his jaw tight. "The traitors were already dead. Necks snapped, throats torn open. It looked like a slaughdriveway. "
"We scrambled the security grid, thinking they moved your body. Ten minutes later, the front gates of the mansion alerted us to a breach. You were lying right on the gravel driveway."
"And the woman?" I asked, my gray eyes narrowing.The memory was still burned into my retinas. The taste of my own blood. The crushing weight of my lungs collapsing. And then, that hallucination. A woman with hair as white as winter snow, looking down at me right before the darkness took me.
."There was no woman, Boss," Marco replied, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Our perimeter cameras showed nothing. The thermal sensors didn't trip. One second the driveway was empty, the next, you were just... there. And that cat was sitting on your chest, licking the blood off your face." A cold sweat broke out across my collarbone. I don't believe in ghosts. I don't believe in magic. I believe in concrete, steel, and a high-caliber bullet to the skull. If someone had the logistical power to bypass my multi-million dollar security system, carry a 240-pound bleeding man onto my property, and vanish without leaving a footprint—they could have easily cut my throat.
