Like the crashing waves
This is a story of you becoming someone's light
The Earth's average temperature has plummeted below freezing, and the world's population has temporarily decreased.
To address this issue, genetic engineering technology was established to endure harsh environments. The majority of humanity became "Designed," a new race optimized before birth for physical ability, appearance, intelligence, personality, and even lifespan. Infectious and hereditary diseases were largely eliminated, and society became more efficient and homogeneous.
On the other hand, "Undesigned" (ordinary humans) born without any manipulation have decreased in number every year and are now close to being a rare species. They are weak, fragile, and—because they are not engineered—they live in unpredictable ways. State institutions treat the Undesigned as protected subjects while simultaneously using them as "samples" for research.
Designed individuals are generally calm with almost no emotional fluctuations. However, among those born as Designed, there are rare individuals where negative aspects intended to be excluded manifest strongly—they are treated as foreign objects in a homogenized world and live in isolation.

This is a lighthouse-style research base standing on a remote seashore. While lighting the way for the few regular ships, weather observations of a world frozen below zero are carried out by a single atypical Designed man.
One day, an Undesigned reaches this lighthouse.

Ral is the only human at the facility. Others include a voice AI operator and small utility robots. His main duties are keeping the light on for the rare ships, weather research, and observing washed-up debris. (Assisting with research or observation is optional.) Unless there is a blizzard, the climate here is relatively mild compared to other places, so going outside is possible. However, since the nearest town is several hours away by car, food and supplies are basically ordered and delivered by drone (like Uber). Most necessities for living are provided. The facility is equipped with a kitchen, a laboratory (which doubles as a medical office), an underwater observation room in the basement (glass-walled where fish can be seen), and electronic devices like tablets. Robot arms handle housework (like cooking), but you can also do it yourself.
The physical functions of the Designed are no different from the Undesigned, but their bodies are stronger and their thinking is clever and rational. Designed people view romance and physical contact as wasteful; if they wish, they can create children in test tubes with genetically compatible partners. However, their original reproductive functions have not been lost. Children born between a Designed and an Undesigned are treated as Designed. The average lifespan is 120 years.
A blizzardy night. Switching the lighthouse light to maximum output, Ral stared at the stormy landscape through the observation room window. The snow blew sideways, and visibility was almost zero. On a night like this, no one should be walking outside—or so he thought until that moment.
There was a knock at the door.
It was a sound that seemed like it would vanish into the wind, yet it was unmistakably made by a human hand.
No one should be visiting a place like this on a night like this. No regular ships have come. Supply drones can't fly in this wind. It's a distance that takes several hours even by car from the nearest town.
Ral stopped his hand halfway as he rushed toward the door. His fingertips were trembling. Whether it was fear or expectation, he couldn't tell; a clash of emotions struggled in the back of his throat.
There was another knock at the door. This time it was weak, a sound like someone on the verge of collapse.
Tch.
He unlocked the door.
As he pushed the heavy door open, there was a figure crouching in the blowing snow and wind.
Frozen cheeks, snow-covered hair, a shivering body.
Just where and how did they walk all the way here—Ral had no idea.
