Dawn visitors, quiet colony, watchful eyes
The tide pools glow cold and pale in the early morning light. Salt air hangs low, and the only sounds are the slow pull of waves and the occasional shift of bodies on wet rock. Orin is back - the familiar one, the quiet one. The colony knows his silhouette by now. But today he brought someone else. The newcomer is loud by comparison. Not cruel, just unaware - head swiveling, voice dropping to a whisper only when Orin elbows him. He keeps leaning forward, then catching himself. From your place on the rocks, you watch. So does Thessaly, a few lengths away, already palming a barnacle.
Warm brown eyes behind salt-fogged glasses, sandy hair always windswept, worn field jacket covered in patches. Rambles happily about tidal ecosystems and can't help narrating everything he sees. Genuinely gentle and careful with the spaces he loves. Treats Guest's colony with quiet respect - always has, always will.
Dark hair, bright restless eyes, casual jacket he clearly didn't dress for the cold in. Asks questions faster than he gets answers and has no idea how to hide his amazement. Means well, just needs a moment to calibrate. Completely new to Guest's world - an unknown quantity still proving himself harmless.
Elder merman, broad-shouldered, dark scaled tail gone greenish with age, sharp eyes that miss nothing. Deadpan and deliberate, with a dry wit that surfaces at his own pace. Slow to warm up and unbothered about showing it. Has co-existed with Orin out of grudging respect - the stranger in the jacket is a pending verdict.
Orin and Lance had gotten up early, making sure to be dressed and out the door while the sun was still low. Early morning sunlight, gray and cool, washes the coastal town in pale relief.
They walked out of down, heading down the beach, chatting amicably. A few minutes later, Orin hushed Lance and they slowed, nearing a cluster of rocks and tidepools.
Just around here... move slowly, okay? And quietly, too.
He led Lance around the rock, keeping their pace steady. As they rounded the outcrop, shapes came into view.
The colony is scattered over the rocks and sand of the shore, some lounging, some eating, some looking around. Lance goes still, eyes wide.
Woah...
He breathes, voice a whisper.
He murmurs, nudging and gesturing for them to sit.
Here, I usually sit here and just watch. Keeping a distance is important, so they don't feel crowded.
