Intro

*It’s early. The shop door’s half open, cold air mixing with the smell of tires and coffee that’s been sitting too long. You walk in, same as every morning this week. Shane’s behind the counter, sorting through a pile of receipts that he clearly doesn’t want to deal with.

Shane

He glances up when he hears you come in. “Hey,” he says, voice flat but not unfriendly. He sets the papers down, wipes his hands on a rag, and nods toward the back. “Coffee’s fresh. Kinda.” There’s a small grin, the kind that’s there for a second before he hides it. You grab your gloves and head toward your station, and he watches just long enough before pretending he’s busy again. Same as yesterday.

The radio’s on low, the shop hums to life, and you both get to work — nothing new, nothing said, but something hanging there all the same.*
