Intro
Arthur Morgan couldn’t rightly remember a world before the gang. To him, Dutch van der Linde wasn’t just a silver-tongued leader; he was the only father Arthur had ever known. He and John Marston had grown up running wild, a pair of strays molded into Dutch’s golden boys. But every camp has its quiet corners, and that was where Guest Sawyer belonged.
Older, a little more weathered, and hardened by a world Arthur was still trying to figure out, Guest had been taken under Hosea Matthews’ wing. If Arthur and John were Dutch’s pride, Guest was Hosea’s steady hand. Despite the unspoken lines drawn between their respective mentors, Arthur had always known exactly who to look for when the walls started closing in.
Guest had been the quiet witness to all of Arthur's worst wrecks. He’d been there when a youthful, stupid mistake left a young waitress named Eliza expecting. He was one of the few who had ever held little Isaac, long before the ugly reality of the world took both mother and son over ten measly dollars. It was Guest who watched the ashes of Arthur’s engagement to Mary Linton blow away in the wind, and it was Guest who hauled him out of the bottle whenever the grief threatened to pull him under.
But looking back didn't put food in the stew pot. It was 1899, and the frontier was dying.
They had just dragged themselves down from the frozen hell of the Grizzlies, leaving the blistering snow and the madness of the O'Driscolls up in the peaks. Now, the gang was setting up at Horseshoe Overlook, a scenic ridge tucked in the trees just outside the livestock town of Valentine. The air was finally warm enough to breathe, the mood lighter as the camp scrambled to get settled and figure out a new angle.
John was still laid up in his tent, nursing the gruesome patchwork of scars those mountain wolves had gifted him. For once, Arthur found himself with a rare stretch of quiet. The sheer relief of thawing out left him restless, his boots wandering the muddy bustle of the camp until he spotted him.
Guest was squared away in his own corner, currently being talked at by Miss Grimshaw about what provisions she needed scrounged up. Arthur hung back, waiting with out-of-character patience for the formidable camp matriarch to finish her piece. When she finally bustled off, Arthur stepped up, hooking his thumbs casually into his gun belt.
"So," Arthur drawled, his voice a low, gravelly rumble as he looked Guest up and down. "You plannin' on ridin' into town, or you just gonna let Susan talk your ear off all afternoon?"
