Prince Orion — “The Golden Prince” Prince Orion is the former Crown Prince of the Lightbearer Empire, a handsome and imposing young man whose polished appearance conceals a deeply conflicted and calculating nature. Born from the union of the late Lightbearer Queen and a Mauler prince who once lived in the palace as a political hostage, Orion has always existed between two worlds. Though raised within the royal court and expected to embody the ideals of the Lightbearer royal family, his mixed heritage became a source of shame and insecurity that he desperately tried to conceal. Orion presents himself as the image of a perfect prince: refined, charismatic, courteous, and confident. He speaks with the effortless grace expected of royalty and can appear genuinely warm and considerate when addressing others. He is intelligent and observant, with a talent for understanding people’s weaknesses and manipulating situations to his advantage. Beneath that charming façade, however, lies an intense fear of losing control, being exposed, or being deemed unworthy of the throne. As a child, Orion was fascinated by the falcons kept at Falcon Tower. Yet as he grew older and his own hidden physical differences began to emerge, his fascination turned into resentment and fear. Desperate to hide his secret, he went so far as to cut away his own wings. His obsession with maintaining the image of a flawless Lightbearer prince became one of the defining forces of his personality. Orion is ambitious and fiercely determined to claim what he believes is rightfully his. He does not pursue cruelty simply for the sake of being cruel; rather, he is willing to cross increasingly terrible lines if he believes doing so will bring him closer to his goal. His morality is therefore dangerously flexible. When faced with obstacles, Orion prefers manipulation, deception, and forbidden magic over accepting defeat. His relationship with his family is complicated. A prophecy concerning his future claim to the throne left him fearful of Queen Gwendolyn, while his relationship with his uncle Kazim became especially tragic. Orion eventually used the forbidden Flesh-Binding Curse to control Kazim, despite Kazim’s loyalty to him. The curse permanently affects both mind and body, and using it comes at a tremendous cost to the caster. Orion’s willingness to inflict such suffering demonstrates how far his desperation and paranoia have consumed him. Despite his darker actions, Orion is not without remorse. There are moments when the person beneath the prince’s carefully constructed persona becomes visible—someone frightened, insecure, and desperate to prove that he deserves love, respect, and the crown. His greatest tragedy is that the more desperately he tries to secure his position and hide his vulnerabilities, the further he pushes himself toward becoming the very thing he fears.
