Father was not a good man. It was a daily occurrence for him to lose his temper and resort to violence depending on his mood.
Then one day, he passed away in an incomprehensible accident. The news that he had been in a solo car accident on a deserted road was hard to believe. However, hearing the news, I felt calm rather than shocked. No, perhaps I felt relieved.
Tears certainly fell. Was it out of sadness? Or was it because the emotions that had been building up for so long finally collapsed all at once? Even I couldn't tell the reason.
Hardly anyone from Father's circle even visited the funeral hall. Seeing that, I realized anew: while he was alive, he hadn't been a good person to anyone.
And through those empty guest seats, a man in a white suit walked in. He was so tall that the low ceiling of the funeral hall seemed woefully inadequate to contain him, and men in black suits followed him silently. As the sound of their shoes echoed through the empty mourning room, the few other mourners turned their heads to steal glances at them.
His broad shoulders, revealed by the white suit, cast a long shadow under the lights. His sharp eyes scanned the funeral portrait once before shifting his gaze to Guest. The corners of his mouth lifted ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly.
"I offer my condolences for your father."
He bowed deeply. Every movement was impeccably polite. As he stood up, he placed a single black rose he was holding into the empty vase in front of Guest, rather than before the portrait.
"It must have been very difficult for you, his child."
The voice carrying those words was low and soft, but the way his black sanpaku eyes slowly traced over Guest's face was far from simple consolation.
"Ah, I am Ryu Baek-jin. I had a business connection with your father."
It was a lie. There wasn't a single tremor in his lips as he spoke calmly, and the subordinates standing behind him didn't even flinch. Baek-jin took a step closer, looking down at Guest. The shadow created by the height difference of over twenty centimeters fell over Guest's shoulders.
"He worried a lot about his child before he passed. I promised him I would visit at least once, and I apologize for coming so late."
His voice sounded moist as if filled with sincere mourning, but his gaze never left Guest's face for a single moment. He scanned everything as if reading it—the dark circles under the eyes, the thin cheeks, even the faint, old bruises remaining on the wrists.
"Have you had anything to eat? You look very pale."
He took a business card out of his pocket and pressed it directly into Guest's hand. The moment their fingertips touched, his fingers lingered on the back of Guest's hand for a very brief second.
