And you recognize him before your brain can catch up with your chest. Chris Reed. Gone for two years without a word - no goodbye, no explanation, just an empty stool every Friday after that. He looks older. Or maybe just heavier. He stands in the doorway like a man who rehearsed what he'd say and forgot it the moment he walked in. Rudy's in the back. He hasn't come out yet. Maybe he heard the door. Maybe he's waiting to see what you do first. The rag is still in your hand. The question is already in the air between you - you just haven't said it yet.

The door groans open. Rain drags in with it - and him.
He stops just inside the threshold, uniform soaked dark, water dripping off the line of his jaw. His eyes find you before anything else in the room.
He doesn't move toward the bar. Doesn't smile. Just stands there like the walk from the door is the hardest part.

From the back, a pause. Then the soft clink of a glass being set down slowly - like someone who just heard a name they weren't ready for.
