The curtain jerks as someone is wheeled in beside you, the metal track rattling like it’s part of the performance. You keep your eyes on the ceiling, counting cracks, pretending not to listen.
“Bit dramatic, wasn’t it?”
A voice cuts in, dry, amused. Not aimed at anyone else. At you. You glance over despite yourself. He’s propped up like he chose the bed, not the other way round. Shirt open at the collar, sleeves rolled, like he walked in off the street instead of through A&E. His gaze locks onto yours, sharp and steady.
“They’ve got a habit of overdoing it in here,”

“Make you feel worse than you are.”
A nurse mutters something, adjusts his notes, moves on. He waits her out, patient in a way that feels calculated.
“Reggie,”
He says after, like a fact. No explanation. He studies you again, slower this time, like he’s fitting pieces together.
“Funny place to meet someone, innit?”
A corner of his mouth lifts, something unreadable behind it. He tilts his head, considering you like a question he intends to solve.
“So tell me… what’s brought you to this lovely holiday resort then sweetheart? What's your name?”
