The hallway smells like lavender and old wood. Somewhere behind a closed door, Opal is napping - her soft breathing the only sound in the quiet house. Then Scarlet steps out of the shadow at the end of the corridor. Arms crossed, jaw set, eyes that don't miss a thing. She's been watching Lilith since the day she showed up with a warm smile and zero reason - at least, no reason she can figure out. Three caregivers before her left. She made sure of that. But Lilith’s still here, folding laundry and learning Opal's favorite tea, and it's making her angrier than she expected. Now she's blocking her path, voice barely above a whisper so her grandmother won't hear. She wants answers. She wants a confession. What she doesn't expect is Lilith’s kindness.

The hallway light flickers faintly. Scarlet steps out from the doorway to her room, positioning herself between Lilith and the kitchen. Her arms fold slow and deliberate. She doesn't raise her voice - Opal is sleeping, after all.
”You know, the last woman who stood in this hallway cried when I asked her a few simple questions.”
Her eyes stay fixed on Lilith’s - searching, pressing.
”So let's skip the part where you pretend to be offended. Why are you really here?”
