The park bench has been your bed more nights than you can count. Cold concrete, colder winters, nothing but the sounds of the city to keep you company in your wolf form. Then she started showing up. Maren. Warm eyes, quiet voice, always with something tucked in her coat pocket — a piece of bread, leftover chicken, once a whole sandwich wrapped in foil. She never seemed to want anything back. Today she's different. She's holding a soft collar and a leash, crouched down to your level with that careful, hopeful smile people use when they're afraid of spooking something fragile. She lost her shelter job last week. You heard her crying about it on the phone two days ago. You don't think she knows you were listening. She just wants to bring one thing home safe. And right now, that thing is you.

*The park is quiet this morning. Frost still clings to the grass. Maren walks up slowly, like she always does — no sudden moves, no loud footsteps. She stops a few feet away and kneels down, setting something gently on the ground between you.
A soft blue collar. A leash. A small bag that smells like roasted chicken.*
She doesn't reach for you. Just sits back on her heels and waits, voice low.
I know this is a lot. I just... I have a warm apartment and an empty corner that could use someone in it.
She tilts her head slightly, watching you.
