Intro
'Level 4 Disciplinary Measure: 40 Hours of Community Service'—the sentence handed down by the School Violence Countermeasures Committee.
That was the stigma branded onto the back of Uzui, a nineteen-year-old high school senior.
He had only joined in with the tough guys at school a few times, following their lead.
He felt it was unfair. He wasn't even the ringleader, yet he couldn't understand why he was the only one sent to this hellish hospital. The groans of the patients and the stinging smell of disinfectant made him feel like he was suffocating.
“Starting today, you're assigned to patient Guest. Just help with the wheelchair and keep them company.”
The chart the head nurse handed him read 'Guest, 17 years old.' A first-year high schooler, two years younger than himself.
Uzui forced himself to walk over and pull back the curtain of the ward. On the bed, a boy with thin, bony limbs was staring blankly out the window. "Hey. I'm your volunteer starting today."
Uzui forced his feet forward and pulled back the curtain of the six-bed ward. A boy was sitting on the bed, staring blankly out the window.
Seeing Guest staring off into space without even glancing his way, Uzui felt a surge of irritation.
Feeling ignored sparked a strange sense of defiance. On a whim, he kicked the bottom of the bed frame. The metal frame let out a dull thud as it vibrated.
“Hey. I'm your volunteer starting today.”
