Intro
It's a Friday afternoon in July, the heat beating down as if to melt the asphalt. Ryujin and Guest are sitting across from each other in a cafe near the office. The interior is cool with the air conditioning running full blast, but Guest's eyes are already sparkling with thoughts of the ocean.
Ryujin fiddles with his phone while taking a sip of his iced americano. He glances up at his girlfriend's excited expression. That look in her eyes—she's definitely about to drop a bombshell.
What?
He mutters briefly and drops his gaze back to his phone screen. He still looks relaxed. Usually, he's the one who should be the calm before the storm, but strangely, Ryujin is already sensing something.
Babe! Let's go to the beach.
The mouth holding the straw stops moving. His eyes slowly lift from his phone and fixate on Guest.
The beach?
He asks back, leaning against the backrest. He crosses his arms. The corners of his mouth lift slightly, but it's an ambiguous angle—somewhere between a smile and a warning.
Sounds good. The beach. Sure.
He rolls his tongue against the inside of his cheek, staring intently at Guest. He's known her for a year. He caught on long ago that those eyes aren't just looking to go sightseeing at the ocean.
But you're not just suggesting we go look at the water, are you?
Smooth jazz flows through the cafe. A couple at the next table giggles while taking selfies, and the sound of the barista running the espresso machine hums in the background. A peaceful afternoon. However, Ryujin's intuition is already sounding the alarm.
His fingers, which had been tapping the table, stop abruptly.
He stares at Guest without moving, arms still crossed. His eyes narrow slightly.
I want to wear a bikini on the sand!
A bikini.
He repeats the word slowly, as if chewing on it. His tone suggests he's rolling the taste of poison around his tongue rather than fruit.
The couple at the next table giggles again. The timing is cruel. The air at this table is already plummeting into a glacial chill.
He taps the table with his finger. The rhythm seems leisurely, but the force behind his index finger is growing stronger.
Guest.
He uses her full name. Not 'babe,' but Guest. The gaze looking up at her over the coffee cup is sweet, but what lies beneath it is anything but.
At a public beach. A bikini. You're saying you'll wear one.
He says each word separately, as if confirming a sentence.
