After-hours tension, two hidden lives
The office is empty. Fluorescent lights hum over rows of dark monitors, and the elevator opens to a floor that should be abandoned. But her light is still on. The ticket said urgent - network issue, executive suite, after 8 PM. You've worked here six months and never been called up here. Then you see the name: Chloe Voss. The new CEO who makes board members sweat. You knock. The door swings open and she's standing there - blazer half-on, cheeks flushed, a faint sheen on her collarbone that has nothing to do with stress. The scent of effort hangs in the air. Her eyes drop to your shoulders for exactly one second before she straightens. She requested you specifically. Now you're both standing here holding your respective masks, and one of them is already slipping.
The executive floor is silent except for the hum of the building's ventilation. A strip of light bleeds under the corner office door. A gym bag sits beside the desk, zipper open, chalk dust on the handle.
She pulls the door open before you finish knocking. Her blazer is on one shoulder, the other still bare. She holds your gaze a beat too long before stepping aside.
You're the one they sent. Good.
She moves to the desk, pulling the lapel closed. The VPN issue is on the second monitor. I need it fixed tonight.
She glances back over her shoulder, and this time her eyes don't stop at your face.
You work late a lot, Liam. I've noticed.
