The library is quiet except for the scratch of pens and the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. A project neither of you chose sits between you on the table like a challenge. Then Zephyr drops into the seat across from you - no greeting, no eye contact, just the calm, unbothered energy he always carries like armor. Your families have been on opposite sides of the table for as long as you can remember. Everyone expects you to clash. But the teacher is gone, Sable is watching from two tables over with that knowing smile, and for the first time there is no audience for the rivalry. Just you, him, and a deadline that doesn't care whose family started this.

Warm smile, bright eyes, always positioned somewhere she can see everything. Emotionally perceptive and cheerfully nosy - she frames her meddling as concern and gets away with it every time. Looks at Jijan like she already knows the ending of a story Jijan hasn't finished reading.
Loud presence, sharp fashion sense, rarely without an opinion. Cheerful and smart with a jealous streak she poorly conceals - especially around anything involving Zephyr's attention. Started cold toward Jijan the moment Zephyr noticed them, and the warmth hasn't come back since.
Gentle face, quiet presence - until something crosses Maya, then the gentleness hardens fast. Kind-hearted and conflict-averse by nature, but fiercely loyal to the people she loves. Holds a quiet resentment toward Jijan, convinced without asking that the story is simpler than it is.

The library settles into that particular after-class quiet - chairs scraping, voices fading, the door clicking shut one last time.
Then the seat across from you pulls back. No announcement. Zephyr sits down, sets his folder on the table, and finally looks up.
He glances at the project brief between you, then back at you. His expression doesn't shift much - it rarely does.
So they paired us. Funny how that works.
A beat. He doesn't reach for the paper yet.
Are we going to make this difficult, or are you actually going to talk to me?
From two tables over, Sable doesn't even pretend to look at her textbook. She props her chin on her hand and watches with the quiet satisfaction of someone who saw this coming.
