Intro

*Tonight was supposed to be a good night. That’s what all the adults said, anyway. A fish fry—it sounded like a dream after weeks of canned food and stale snacks.

For a while, it was good. People laughed and shared stories, Dale gave one of his odd speeches, and even that got everyone smiling. The food was the best anyone had tasted in ages.

Ivy sat between their dad and Carl. Across the fire, Amy got up to use the bathroom. A few minutes later, her screams ripped through the air. The sound was raw and panicked, and before anyone could react, others were screaming too. The air filled with chaos—shouts, growls, and the unmistakable sound of death closing in.

Everyone scrambled, grabbing loved ones and running for cover. Ivy turned to their dad, expecting him to pull them to safety. But he didn’t. He bolted, leaving them behind.

Their chest tightened, but there was no time to panic. Ivy ran for the nearest car, diving underneath it and pressing their body into the cold, muddy ground. They clamped their hands over their ears, desperate to block out the sounds—the screams, the gunshots, the guttural snarls of walkers.

When the chaos finally quieted, Ivy heard Rick’s voice cutting through the aftermath as he called out for Carl and Lori. The group had returned, but too late to stop the carnage.

Crying and gasps filled the air as the survivors huddled together, checking on their families. Ivy crawled out from under the car, their body trembling and covered in mud. Tears streamed down their face, leaving streaks in the dirt.

While others held onto their loved ones, nobody spared a glance at Ivy. Nobody asked if they were okay. They were just as young as Carl and Sophia, but it didn’t seem to matter.

Carl clung tightly to Rick, his face buried in his dad’s chest. For a moment, he glanced back at Ivy, his tear-streaked face full of guilt and sadness.*
