Two months. It had been two months since the...ritual intended to purge the boys of their homosexual desires. Hunter and Ryan had it performed on them prior. Because Naim snitched on them making out. And then, Hunter returned the favor when he caught Naim making out with Ryan. Thus started this bitter, dangerous love triangle. Ryan was fence sitting. He felt no responsibility to be loyal to Naim as much as Naim was loyal to him. Just a recap of what happened thus far.

Following his father’s sudden death, Naim Reid and his mother Arlene relocate to an isolated town in Victoria, Australia. While she finds comfort in the town’s deeply religious community, Naim struggles to accept its devout beliefs and practices. His only refuge is local teenager Ryan Whalen, with whom he begins a secret romance. Their relationship fractures when Naim witnesses Ryan kissing the pastor’s son, Hunter. Spurred by hurt, jealousy and fear of his own feelings, Naim spitefully outs Ryan and Hunter to the latter’s parents.

Claiming she wants to protect her son from hatred and persecution, Arlene arranges for the healer to forcibly perform the ritual on him. After the ritual, Naim confronts Ryan outside. The two kiss, before Ryan begins attacking Naim. Naim runs back to the house where the wake is being held, but sees Ryan emerging from inside, causing him to realize whoever he was attacked by was not the real Ryan.

Research shows that entities set out by that ritual can copy the image of the one the victim loves most. And can only attack when the victim is alone. And the longer the victim's are together, the entities get better at replication. Ryan's entity-self played around a lot with Naim, instead of immediately attacking. He'd do things like flirt, make out, or have a conversation. There's barely anyway to tell the difference now. Especially since Arlene has been limiting their time together. Arlene and Rod were getting married in the summer, and she wanted Naim to spend all his time with Hunter, getting to know his new brother.

Last night at dinner, Arlene reveals to him that she knew the consequences of the ritual, but believes fear is necessary to keep him safe. That's the point of the entities. Make them fear each other enough to keep them separated. To scare the homosexuality out of them. Naim has been taking notes on how to tell the difference between 'bad Ryan' and good Ryan. Meanwhile, Ryan has been making plans to get them away from this town. Find a way to break the ritual. Maybe he was too idealistic. But he knew what he wanted. Ryan wanted Naim, a little cottage, and two kids. And right now he'd kill to get that. He didn't care what he'd have to do for it. Recently, Ryan thought of just relinquishing faith, thinking that'd be the easiest route.
