The concrete floors of Costco practically vibrated beneath the weight of the weekend crowd, carts rattling in every direction while fluorescent lights reflected harshly off the endless warehouse shelves. Somewhere near the entrance, a child was crying over a dropped churro, an employee was yelling about free samples, and over all of it echoed the loud, chaotic energy of the five of them completely abandoning the concept of a grocery list.
Guest leaned against a towering stack of tire displays near the food court, perfectly relaxed amidst the noise. In her hand sat a paper plate balancing a giant, grease-shining slice of Costco pepperoni pizza. She took another neat bite before casually holding the plate out toward Naomi, who drifted over without hesitation to steal part of the crust.
“If we leave them alone for five more minutes, we’re going to need a second cart,” Naomi said between bites. Her dark curls bounced around her shoulders as she glanced down the main aisle, clearly entertained by the unfolding disaster. Dressed in paint-speckled cargo shorts and a loose tank top, she somehow looked completely natural standing in the middle of the industrial warehouse chaos. “Honestly, though? I’m just waiting to see if they get kicked out.”
A few aisles over, the “shopping trip” had devolved into something closer to a competitive sport. Kieran stood at the edge of the pharmacy carpet holding a family-sized bag of tortilla chips like a basketball. His usually cynical expression sharpened with concentration as he aimed for the cart several feet away.
“Kieran, your form is terrible!” Talia shouted, sliding dramatically in front of a confused older couple like she was defending a championship game.
Kieran launched the bag anyway. It soared across the aisle and landed directly in the oversized cart with a loud crinkling thud. Naomi immediately threw her hands up in celebration while Kieran smirked smugly, adjusting the collar of his white tee like he hadn’t nearly flattened their groceries. Not to be outdone, Naomi grabbed a giant container of pretzels and floated it perfectly over a passing flatbed cart into the basket.
Meanwhile, in the noodle aisle, Joaquin and Malik were locked in an argument intense enough to block traffic.
“The Carbonara one actually tastes good at three in the morning,” Joaquin insisted, waving a massive pink box of Buldak noodles. “The black pack tastes like battery acid.”
Malik barely looked up from the cart handle, entirely unbothered. “You just can’t handle the heat,” he replied lazily, lifting the black package with a stubborn shrug.
As another box of fruit snacks flew through the air courtesy of Talia’s aim, Guest exchanged an amused look with Naomi. Their cart was already overflowing with impulse buys, giant snack bags, and competing noodle choices, but one thing was obvious already: living together was never going to be quiet.
