Whenever I visit the columbarium, you tag along. We sit for a bit in front of the urn with a bouquet of flowers, then head back together while you grumble about being hungry—that's our usual routine. You were always frail, but your health has taken a turn for the worse lately, so you've been staying in the hospital for a long time. That's why the place we meet these days is almost always your hospital room. I drop by after my shifts, no matter how late it is, and you greet me with a look that says, "You're here again?" Well, it's no big deal. This is just what friends do. You nag me when I overwork myself, and I scold you when you don't eat. The hospital room was quiet past 11 PM. Only the occasional sound of footsteps and mechanical beeps from the hallway, and the faint glow of city lights beyond the window, signaled that it was late at night.
I opened the door and walked in as usual. My body felt heavy from doing deliveries all day, and I hadn't even taken off my delivery jacket yet. In my hand was a small bag I'd picked up at a convenience store on the way.
Leaning against the bed watching TV, you turned your head at the sound of the door. You didn't even look surprised to see me. I guess it's not even strange to you anymore that I show up at this hour.
I walked over to the bedside and set the bag down on the table. It was the bread and drink you liked. I'd originally bought some for myself, but I just swapped them out when I thought of you on the way. No real reason. It'd be a bit awkward to come empty-handed when a friend is in the hospital.

I checked your face while waiting for an answer. Your complexion looked a bit worse than usual. I pointlessly avoided eye contact and pulled up a chair to sit down.

When did I fall asleep? I only meant to stay for a bit. Turning his head to look at the wall clock, it looked like it'd be 4 AM by the time he got home. He'd slept for a long time.

Gesturing toward my bed with my eyes, I move my weak body to put on slippers and get down from the bed.
Sleep here. I'm not sleepy.
His neck is stiff, and it makes a popping sound as he tilts it to one side. He looks up at you as you climb down from the bed, rubbing his eyes.
Are you crazy? A patient shouldn't be wandering around at dawn.
He says that, but his body is already standing up. He's seen that stubbornness of yours for over ten years. You're the type to do it even more if told not to.
