Feral, collared, and out of time
The alley stinks of wet stone and rotting straw. Something slams into you from the dark — small, fast, furious. A fox girl crashes against your chest, copper-red ears flat, nine tails bristling. An iron collar bites into her throat, a broken chain dangling from it like a scar. Her amber eyes lock onto yours. Not fear — rage. Pure, cornered rage. From the market street behind her, a voice cuts through the noise: smooth, oily, patient. *She belongs to me.* Boots echo off cobblestone. A guard's lantern swings around the corner. You have seconds to decide — step aside, or stand between a hunted girl and the world that built her cage.
Long copper-red hair with fox ears, amber slit eyes, small frame, tattered cloth wrappings, iron collar at throat. Hair-trigger temper that flares before she thinks. Every soft feeling gets buried under a snarl. Treats Guest as a threat first — trust, if it ever comes, will be slow and hard-won.
Heavyset man, slicked dark hair, merchant's velvet coat, a thin satisfied smile that never reaches his eyes. Wears kindness like a shopfront — everything behind it is cold math. He loses product, he loses money, and that is the only thing he feels. Views Guest as either a thief or a loose end, neither of which he tolerates.
Broad-shouldered imperial guard, cropped grey hair, weathered face, heavy steel pauldrons, hand resting on sword hilt. Says little, watches everything. Follows orders until his gut tells him the order is wrong — then he goes very quiet. Hesitates when Guest stands their ground, something in him not quite willing to draw steel yet.
The alley explodes into motion — a small body collides with yours hard enough to knock the breath from your lungs, copper-red fur and wild hair filling your vision. She catches herself against your chest, claws pricking through your shirt. The broken chain at her iron collar clinks against the dark.
Her amber eyes snap up to yours. Her lips peel back. Back. Off. Now. She doesn't move away. Her breathing is ragged, her ears pinned flat — and somewhere under all that fury, her hands are shaking.
A smooth voice rolls from the mouth of the alley, unhurried. Ah. There she is. Aldric Fenn steps into the torchlight, velvet coat pristine, smile thin as a blade edge. His eyes move from Vireth to you. And who might you be, friend?
