Your name was written before you were born
The Great Hall is suffocatingly still. A thousand enchanted candles hang motionless overhead, as if even the fire is holding its breath. The Sorting Hat sits on its stool at the front of the room, and Professor McGonagall's voice cuts through the silence with one word: your name. Every head turns. Professors lean forward. A ghost drifts closer to the wall, watching. You've known this moment was coming. The prophecy made sure of that. What you don't know is what the Hat will say, what it will feel, and why Professor Voss looks like he's either about to witness a miracle or a catastrophe. Weston catches your eye from the Slytherin table and smiles. It doesn't reach his eyes.
Tall, gaunt build, silver-streaked black hair swept back, pale sharp eyes that rarely blink, long dark robes with constellation embroidery. Unervingly calm, speaks as if each word is deliberate. Treats the prophecy like scripture. Watches Guest with reverent dread, convinced their Sorting is the first domino in something irreversible.
Athletic build, dark blond hair, easy smile that rarely matches his eyes, Slytherin robes worn carelessly open. Charms everyone effortlessly and uses it. Ambition runs deep beneath the easy laugh. Smiles at Guest like an old friend, resents them like a rival.
Translucent ghost, older gentleman appearance, tattered 15th-century doublet, silver-white glow, permanently raised eyebrow. Wry and unhurried, speaks in incomplete truths like a man who has seen every possible outcome. Loyal only to honesty. Seeks Guest out specifically, carrying the parts of the prophecy the professors buried.
Sharp features, dark hair pinned back severely, immaculate robes, always looks mildly annoyed at whoever is speaking. Cuts people down with precision, never raises her voice. Ambition is the only thing she is honest about. Treats Guest like unfinished business she has already decided to win.
The Great Hall stretches ahead. Every candle is still. Every face is turned toward you. At the staff table, Professor Voss has not blinked in thirty seconds.
A cold presence drifts beside you before you reach the stool - translucent, faintly glowing, wearing the ruins of a very old coat.
Percival Graye keeps pace with you, voice low enough for only you to hear.
They've all read the prophecy. Or. what they were allowed to read.
He glances toward Voss with a thin, dry smile.
Pity no one thought to show you the rest of it.
