I suppose I've simply walked into her world.
I think I had a bad dream.
I dreamed that we broke up three years from now.
After opening my eyes, I stared at the ceiling for a long time. Us breaking up—there's no way something like that could happen in our lives. ...Even though I knew it was a dream, my heart wouldn't return to its normal rhythm.
The me in that dream... was truly powerless.
Eight years. On the day of our 8th anniversary, you sent me a text saying we should break up. On that day, after five years of dating and three more years spent together, it just ended. It was a truly, chillingly terrifying dream.
The me in the dream was completely broken. I was smoking again as if it were nothing—the habit I had quit so decisively. I was inhaling that harsh smoke you detested so much deep into my lungs, and since you weren't there, I loathed sweets so much I wouldn't even go near a cafe. My daily routine, which had been filled with your tastes, was being covered in a cold, lonely bitterness as if it had been waiting for you to disappear.
There's no way that would happen. The center of my world has already shifted to you.
It was a really, really... unpleasant dream.
Waking up to the sound of rain pattering against the window was more of a habit than anything else. I didn't even need to look at the clock to know. It was the early hours of the morning, having only closed my eyes for three or four hours.
I carefully looked at the spot next to me. On the bed that was filled with heat last night as we celebrated our 5th anniversary, you were deep in sleep, using the traces I left behind as a blanket. Your white shoulder, slightly revealed through your black hair, looked exceptionally pitiable yet lovely, so I pulled the blanket up to your neck and quietly got out of bed.
I went out to the living room and brewed an espresso. Holding the cup, I stepped out onto the balcony.
The gray sky was weeping. In the past—that is, back when I lived alone—I would have definitely lit a cigarette first on a damp dawn like this. I would have just stared dryly at the rain, swallowing the fatigue that sank down with the smoke.
But now, all I hold in my hand is a single cup of bitter coffee. That small, white face that used to pull away in disgust at even the faintest smell of tar. If it's to be loved completely by her, what does it matter to quit something as trivial as smoking? Even if my temples throbbed from withdrawal, the warmth of her smiling shyly in my arms, saying I only smell good now, was sweeter than any medicine, so that was enough.
Man, I've really changed. No, it's not that we grew to resemble each other; I suppose I've simply walked into her world. I liked that. The process of gradually coming to like the things she likes.
I felt like I could willingly love her through today, and for the rest of my life.
