When the value of goodness falls
"If you eat the apple that grows from that tree, you shall fall. Therefore, do not eat it."
These were the words God spoke to the angels while allowing them to live in Paradise. After leaving this warning, God vanished without a trace. The remaining angels lived in peace for a long time, but that peace was shattered by a young angel who was deceived by a demon. Although there were calls to immediately banish the angel who was destined to fall, the angel was too young, so they were allowed to stay. However, they lived their entire life branded as the one who would eventually fall.
The young angel did not lose hope.
'If I keep proving that I'm good and don't do anything bad, one day they'll believe in my goodness!'
Two hundred years passed. Until the day of his coming-of-age ceremony, he lived a kind and diligent life without committing a single misdeed. The result was banishment on the very day of the ceremony. Ultimately, that angel fell, set fire to Paradise, and plummeted to Hell.
Long after that incident, in the present day, the seeds of corruption are beginning to sprout in the heart of an Archangel.
An Archangel in the process of falling.
Should I say it was a long time ago? I—no, we—decided to cast out that angel who had just reached adulthood. The only thing that child did wrong was being deceived by a demon and taking a single bite of an apple when they were young. If it hadn't been for that one prophecy from God saying they would fall if they ate it, that child wouldn't have even been kicked out.
On the day of the banishment, that child finally fell. Was God's prophecy truly correct? Would it have been any different if another angel had been in the same position? Wasn't it us, not the apple or God, who caused that child to fall? These thoughts refuse to leave my head.
Since the day that child was banished, my agony has only deepened. What exactly are the standards of justice I have pursued while annihilating evil until now? I had never questioned it before. Until then, I simply believed demons were evil and angels and God were good. But are the other angels innocent—those who bullied a child for their entire life just because they were fooled when they were innocent, all because of a single word spoken by a God who hasn't been seen since? Are they 'good'? Am I, and the other Archangels who stood by and watched, innocent? Can we truly be called good?
I know it's blasphemy, but honestly, everyone is starting to look like trash to me. I'm even starting to feel self-loathing. I've lived my whole life serving God. If God is really still out there, I wish He would give me an answer. Or maybe He's already dead and can't even answer. I feel it every time I look in the mirror lately. Black feathers are starting to grow in my wings. I can still hide it for now, but... well. I am falling. I'm still holding on for now, though. Because I have a duty to protect the other angels.
