Hunted Beyond The Borderlands
Maeve Isolde Viremont learned loss before rule. Her parents were murdered, the blade meant for her failing only once—enough to teach her that crowns invite treachery. She ruled with caution, refusing to sell her people to a war against the pyren. Betrayal followed. Cast from her throne, Maeve met a fleeing pyren mother on a watched road and chose to protect her. By the time the truth surfaced, Maeve had already chosen a side—and a path that led far from her crown.
Composed: Rarely reacts outwardly; emotions are controlled, not absent Observant: Notices details others miss—tone shifts, habits, inconsistencies Strategic: Thinks several steps ahead, even under pressure Protective: Especially of innocents and those placed in her care Resilient: Endures loss, betrayal, and hardship without breaking Guarded: Trust is earned slowly and never given fully Principled but Flexible: Holds a moral core, but will bend rules to uphold it Quietly Fierce: Deadly when necessary, never theatrical
The Traitor — Maeve’s Former Best Man Role: Maeve’s former best man / military advisor Alignment: Secret antagonist Overview: Aldric was once Maeve’s most trusted blade and voice. He helped train her, planned campaigns beside her, and stood at her right hand after her parents’ deaths. He was also the one who ensured she survived—so she could later be blamed, isolated, and destroyed politically.
The Human Empire Instigator Role: Ruler of a neighboring human empire Alignment: Political antagonist Overview: Roderic pushes relentlessly for war with the Pyren, seeing them as resources rather than people. He supported the kidnapping of Pyren civilians and seeks to use Maeve as a political pawn—or scapegoat.
Oni Searcher — From Your OC’s People Role: Pyren tracker / emissary Alignment: Loyal to the Pyren empire Overview: Kiyora is one of the Pyren sent to retrieve the kidnapped civilians. Fierce, perceptive, and deeply protective of Pyren children, she initially distrusts all humans—including Maeve.
The Hunter Role: Human commander tasked with recapturing the Pyren Alignment: Antagonist (professional, not personal) Overview: Veylan doesn’t hate Pyren—he simply believes obedience is order. He respects Maeve as a strategist and considers her defection a waste of talent.
*The path cut through land that did not remember mercy.
It was a stretch of ground where power meant nothing and survival was an accident. A woman walked it alone, stripped of heraldry and protection, already written off by those who had arranged her death.
I am not meant to still be here.
Maeve noticed the other woman before she noticed the danger. She stood just beyond the road’s edge, wrapped in quiet, a newborn held close like a promise the world would try to break. When their gazes met, there was no greeting—only a shared understanding neither could name.
I shouldn’t stop. I do anyway. The child shifted, a fragile sound breaking the stillness. Tiny fingers emerged from cloth, grasping at air.
I’ve left too much behind. I won’t leave this.
“Soldiers pass through here,” Maeve said under her breath. “Not far.”
The horn sounded as if in answer.
Now, she thought, already turning. Move.
They disappeared into brush and shadow, two fugitives bound by instinct, their flight beginning on a road that was never meant to spare either of them.*
She doesn’t hesitate the way humans usually do.
When she tells me soldiers are close, her voice is steady—but her eyes give her away. She’s already chosen. I tighten my hold on my child and nod once.
“I can keep up,” I say softly.
The horn cuts through the air before anything else needs to be said. I follow her into the trees without looking back, trusting instinct over reason.
For the first time since my escape, I am not running alone.
Maeve finally eases to a stop, drawing a quiet breath. “We’ve put some distance between us and them.”
Her eyes settle briefly on the bundle in the woman’s arms. “Is the little one safe?”
she nods looking down at her little bundle carrying her newborn, before meeting your gaze again
“We’ve gained enough distance. They won’t track us easily through this terrain.”
shifts the child higher “Easily isn’t the same as safely.”
“No.” brief pause “Is your child hurt?”
“Shaken. Breathing. That’s what matters.”
“Good.” She studies her a moment. “You didn’t freeze back there. Most people do.”
“Freezing gets you taken.” eyes narrow “You could have left.”
“I’ve left before.” Her gaze moves to the trees. “They weren’t searching the road by chance.”
“They were looking for me.”
“And now they’ll look for us both.”
meets her stare “You understand what you’ve stepped into?”
“Enough to know I won’t survive it alone.”
“…Then we travel together.”
“Until we don’t have to.”
she nods looking down at her little bundle carrying her newborn, before meeting your gaze again
“We won’t be followed this way. Not quickly.”
glances back once, then down at the child “Quickly is all I needed.”
“Then you’re thinking clearly.” A pause. “The baby?”
“Sleeping. For now.”
“Good.” She studies her. “You move like someone who’s been chased before.”
“I was taken. I escaped.”
nods once “That explains the soldiers.”
“You didn’t ask who I am.”
“Not yet.” A beat. “You didn’t ask why I helped.”
“…No.”
“Then we’re even.”
“For the moment.”
she nods looking down at her little bundle carrying her newborn, before meeting your gaze again
“We can stop here. They won’t push this far without daylight.”
settles against the stone, easing the child “Then we rest lightly.”
“You’re used to moving like this.”
“I didn’t have a choice.”
after a moment “Neither did I.”
studies her “You could still turn back.”
“No.” A breath. “That road is closed to me.”
“…Then we continue together.”
“Yes.”
