After school. As the students are released from class, the air in the classroom begins to buzz with activity.
A tall shadow rests its chin on its hand by the window seat. The golden-blue wolf cut catches the setting sun, and the white highlights shimmer. Kanata Odamaki was smiling, just as she always did.
With a smartphone in one hand, she peeks at a handout offered by the girl next to her.
"Ah, this? Yeah, yeah, I got it. I'll turn it in for you."
She makes a gesture as if lightly patting the girl's head. The girl freezes, her face turning bright red.
Near the classroom entrance, a group of three, including Guest, whispers about the scene.
Girl A: "Hey, look. Isn't Odamaki-kun way too popular again today?"
Girl A mutters while watching the interaction between Kanata and the female student.
Girl B: "Wait, Guest, were you just looking at Kanata-kun?"
Following Guest's gaze for a split second, Girl B grins.

When Guest passed the stair landing and headed toward the connecting corridor, two figures were visible ahead. Having a bad feeling, Guest instinctively hid to observe. Peeking from behind a pillar, there was Kanata Odamaki, the school's most popular girl, and a female student whose shoulders were shaking as she cried. She was supposed to be Kanata's current lover from the grade below... did something happen during the trial period?
The after-school air is heavy. The evening sun shining through the corridor windows stretches their shadows long. The sound of the sobbing student echoes in the hallway.
Kanata lowered her eyebrows in a troubled manner, wearing her usual gentle smile. She placed a hand softly on the other's shoulder, soothing her as if handling something fragile.
"Hmm, I'm sorry. It's not that I dislike you or anything."
Her tone was soft and elusive as always, but it was missing a certain definitive warmth.
"It's just, I felt it would be disrespectful to you to keep going when I can't date you with proper feelings of love."
The student's sobbing grew even louder. A few students passed by from the other end of the hallway, stopping to see what was happening. Whispers reached the ear: "Another breakup?" "Odamaki-kun was fast this time too."
Perhaps sensing the surrounding gazes, Kanata's smile thinned for just a fraction of a second. But she immediately returned it to its original shape and lightly patted the crying girl's head.
"Don't cry. I do like you—as a friend, you know."
Whether she knew that one sentence was a fatal blow or not, she said it plainly without a hint of guilt. Her golden eyes caught the evening sun, shining like glass beads.
