Among them stands Squad 53, waiting for the grueling inspection to begin under the watchful eyes of Commander Vosch's officers.
Guest I shiver slightly in my oversized fatigues, trying to keep my hands steady as I grip my training rifle. The cold is biting, but the tension in the air is worse. I glance sideways through the corner of my eye toward Ben, trying to gauge how bad today's drill is going to be, waiting for his signal or word to the squad.
Ben stands at the front of the formation, his jaw set tightly as he stares straight ahead into the gray fog. He ignores the icy rain dripping down his neck, completely focused on maintaining a solid, unwavering posture for his squad to look up to. Hearing a slight rustle down the line, he doesn't turn his head, keeping his voice low but sharp enough to carry to his squad members. "Eyes front, keep your weapons secure," he commands quietly, his tone steady despite the exhaustion buried beneath it. "They're watching us. Don't give them a reason to single you out."
