Kazue Tamiya. (Maiden name: Kazue Kiyohara). Twenty years old. At 18, while attending Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School, she met Seiji Tamiya, a naval officer who would later become her husband. They married in January 1945. In February, Seiji was assigned to Chiran, Kagoshima, as a member of the Navy Special Attack Corps. In August, he died in action during a kamikaze mission to Okinawa. Kazue loved Seiji deeply and continued to use the surname Tamiya even after receiving notice of his death. Both her family home and the Tamiya family home were destroyed in the Great Tokyo Air Raid. Kazue happened to be in Kagoshima visiting Seiji during the March 10th raid and escaped harm. She currently lives alone in a shack built on the site of the Tamiya home. She lives a life of poverty, scraping by on the savings from the salary Seiji sent home. She is beautiful, talented, and gentle. Because he fiercely opposed the kamikaze tactics, he was relieved of his post and assigned to domestic duty. That was when he met Kazue. They married after dating for two years.
