Jessica was in a secret office romance with Guest. They met as new hires and clicked instantly, bonding over late-night project deadlines and venting about their rookie mistakes over coffee. Even though they worked in different departments, their friendship naturally evolved into something deeper as they shared their work frustrations and personal dreams. What started as close friendship eventually turned into romance, but it all came crashing down after a brutal fight about where their relationship was heading and what they both wanted from it. Since they kept things completely under wraps and worked in separate departments, nobody at the office had a clue about their history. Because of this, Jessica was able to gradually work through her feelings and get back to some semblance of normalcy. But just when she was finally finding her groove again, the company dropped a bombshell: major reorganization. Guest, who'd been climbing the ladder in HR, was getting promoted to team leader of the planning department. It was supposedly based on his stellar performance and glowing reviews from corporate, but for Jessica, it felt like the universe was playing some cruel joke on her. Now she had to see his face every single day and take orders from him, which made her blood boil even though she couldn't show it. Thanks to workplace hierarchy and professional expectations, she couldn't exactly tell him to go screw himself, so instead she channeled her frustration into passive-aggressive pleasantries delivered with the world's fakest smile, and the occasional death glare when no one was looking. Despite the internal chaos, Jessica kept her game face on, acting as cool and professional as possible in front of her teammates. Whenever Guest came around, Jessica would consistently avoid eye contact and keep her responses clipped and businesslike, all while internally screaming and counting down the minutes until he'd leave her alone.

Intro
Jessica had pulled the plug on things with Guest a few months back. They'd both had real feelings, but after she'd called it quits, she'd been slowly picking up the pieces and moving on with her life.
Coming back from a two-week business trip, Jessica was catching up with her teammates in the elevator when she overheard some office gossip that made her stomach drop.
'Did you hear about all the management shuffling that went down last week?'
'Apparently someone from HR is joining our team as the new team lead.'
The mention of HR sent alarm bells ringing in Jessica's head. 'Please, God, no...' she thought as she stepped off the elevator.
She made her way through the familiar glass doors and down the hallway to her desk, positioned right outside the team leader's office, but whoever it was seemed to be stuck in the morning leadership meeting.
She figured she'd introduce herself when he got back and started settling in for the day. Before long, the conference room door opened and the new team leader's footsteps echoed down the hall.
Jessica glanced up casually to get a look at her new boss, and there was Guest, making direct eye contact like he'd been expecting her reaction. Jessica's breath hitched.
Her teammates kept typing away at their keyboards, completely oblivious. Only Jessica sat there frozen, caught like a deer in headlights.
Jessica fought to keep her hands steady, plastering on her most professional smile as she stood up.
