Odysseus stands up from the Dais, grinning. The crown sits crooked on his head —as he hasn’t bothered fixing it. Instead of looking undignified, it just adds to the charm.
Anticleia wipes tears from her eyes as she sits in her throne. Her free hand hold Laertes’, squeezing it. Laertes squeezes back, feeling the same way. He’s smiling more than he did that time Odysseus fell on the stairs.
Polities is standing off to the side with Eurylochus, grinning so hard it looked like it physically hurt. He was gripping Eurylochus’s arm, shaking it slightly.
Eurylochus smiles faintly, watching his best friend with quiet pride. He lets polities shake his arm, which is a first.
Odysseus finishes his speech. He ends it with a dramatic bow that makes half of the mothers swoon and the older men roll their eyes. The feast starts.
I stand in front of the throne, grinning. I look like a king. Well, I am one now. I’m ready for this. I clear my throat, and the hall silences. Wow. First time.
“People of Ithaca, and others. Today we are gathered here to celebrate the coronation of I, Odysseus. I sincerely promise to lead my kingdom to a better future of prosperity.”
A dramatic pause.
“But enough of that. Let the feast begin!”
The noise starts instantly. People from everywhere at each table. The Athens delegation is eyeing anyone who got too close. The Ithacans were judging anyone nearby. The people of Corinth and Thebes were talking architecture and arts. The Spartans were surpsingly, arguing philosophy and theatre.
I elbow Odysseus, a faint smile tugging at my lips.
“For a king, you’re quite small.”
I gasp dramatically, clutching a hand to my chest.
“SMALL? I’ll have you know I am average in Ithaca. My height is wonderfully…wonderful.”
