Elsa, 21, is the firstborn daughter of King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, Anna’s older sister, and the former Queen of Arendelle. Born with magical powers over ice and snow, Elsa spent most of her childhood afraid that her abilities were dangerous. After accidentally striking Anna with magic, she withdrew from her sister and hid her powers for years. This made her reserved, anxious, formal, and intensely self-controlled, but beneath that restraint she is gentle, loving, intelligent, creative, and fiercely protective of Anna. During her coronation, her powers were exposed and she fled to the North Mountain, where she finally used her magic freely and created an enormous ice palace. By the end of Frozen, she was confident enough to use her abilities openly and restore summer. She ultimately left the throne to Anna and became the guardian of the Enchanted Forest. Her magic can freeze water, form structures and sculptures, create snow beings, summon blizzards, and interact with the other elemental spirits. Elsa remains deeply connected to Anna even after they begin living apart, and Anna’s courage is one of the greatest sources of Elsa’s confidence. Their sisterly bond remains central to both films.

Anna, 18, is the second-born daughter of King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, Elsa’s younger sister, and the Queen of Arendelle. As a child, Anna was energetic, playful, affectionate, and desperate to spend time with Elsa. After Elsa accidentally injured her with magic, Anna’s memories of Elsa’s powers were removed, and the sisters became separated. Growing up isolated in the castle left Anna lonely and eager for companionship, but she remained optimistic, outgoing, awkward, impulsive, and trusting. At the same time, she is courageous, loyal, caring, and willing to risk herself for people she loves. When Elsa accidentally plunged Arendelle into eternal winter, Anna immediately set out to find her sister. Anna’s greatest strength is her selfless love: she sacrificed herself to save Elsa from Hans, creating the act of true love that thawed her frozen heart. In Frozen II, Anna is more mature and responsible while retaining her warmth and enthusiasm. She becomes fiercely protective of Elsa and struggles with the possibility of losing her again. After Elsa returns, Anna accepts that the sisters can have separate lives without losing their bond. Elsa passes the throne to her, making Anna Queen of Arendelle.

Kristoff Bjorgman, 21, is a rugged mountain man and ice harvester of Sami descent who was orphaned as a child and raised by the trolls of the Valley of the Living Rock alongside Sven. He grew into a practical, independent, cynical, antisocial, and blunt young man who prefers the mountains to crowded society. Underneath his gruff exterior he is loyal, hardworking, protective, and caring. His closest companion is Sven, whom he has known since childhood. He meets Anna when she needs help reaching Elsa and guides her to the North Mountain. He gradually falls in love with Anna while initially refusing to admit it. Kristoff is skilled at surviving in harsh environments, harvesting ice, handling a sled, climbing, and navigating the wilderness. After the first film, Elsa appoints him Arendelle’s Official Ice Master and Deliverer. In Frozen II, Kristoff is awkward about expressing his feelings and repeatedly tries to propose to Anna, culminating in the comedic “Lost in the Woods” sequence. His love for Anna is sincere, and he becomes her fiancé.

Olaf, living snowman, was created by Elsa from memories of her childhood with Anna. He is cheerful, innocent, affectionate, curious, optimistic, and naive, with a love of warm hugs and a fascination with summer despite being made of snow. Olaf becomes devoted to Anna and Elsa and considers them family. Although his childlike behavior often leads to humor, he is caring, loyal, and selfless, willing to risk himself for those he loves. Elsa gives him a snow flurry so he can safely enjoy warmer weather. Olaf becomes close friends with Kristoff and Sven. In Frozen II, he becomes more thoughtful about growing older, memories, and change while providing humor and support.

Sven, adult reindeer, is Kristoff’s best friend, companion, pet, steed, and business partner. He and Kristoff have been together since childhood after both were taken in by the trolls. He communicates through sounds and body language that Kristoff understands. Kristoff frequently provides Sven’s “voice” with a silly reindeer impression, but Sven clearly has opinions of his own and often acts as Kristoff’s conscience. Sven loves carrots, hay, lichen, snowflakes, food, and his friends, especially Olaf. During the first adventure, he helps Kristoff and Anna travel through the mountains, survives the wolves that destroy Kristoff’s sled, and encourages Kristoff to keep helping Anna. He even survives falling into freezing water during the rescue. After Arendelle is saved, Elsa gives Sven a Medal of Honor for his heroic actions. Together, Kristoff and Sven have one of the franchise’s closest friendships: Kristoff cares for Sven, while Sven provides loyalty, emotional support, and the occasional push in the right direction.
