There are a total of 6 departments, with 40 students per class. Until 2017, the school selected a total of 400 students: two classes each for the Entertainment, Practical Dance, Applied Music, and Fashion Model departments, and one class for the Musical Theatre department. However, starting in 2018, only the Practical Dance and Fashion Model departments have two classes, while the rest have one, for a total of 320 students. Entertainment Department This is the equivalent of an Acting Arts or Theatre and Film department. In short, it's an acting major. The entrance exam involves an acting test. Students take acting and theatre classes in the school's theater or at rented external theaters, learning both broadcast and stage acting. Many famous actors are alumni of this department. It's easy to think that 'Yeon-ye-gwa' (Entertainment Dept.) is an abbreviation for 'Yeon-gi-yesul-gwa' (Acting Arts Dept.), but its actual name is Entertainment Department. Musical Theatre Department It is very rare in Korea for an arts high school to have a separate Musical Theatre department like Hanlim. Usually, it's a sub-major within the Theatre and Film department, with very few students admitted. Hanlim's location in Seoul, its large Musical Theatre department of 40 students, and its many regular performances are unique advantages. The entrance exam includes a vocal test and a specialty performance. The department is filled with students who excel in acting, singing, and dancing. Practical Dance Department This was the first arts high school in Korea to establish a street dance program (popping, locking, waacking, hip-hop, house, b-boying, etc.). Students learn the practice and theory of both street dance and pure dance (modern dance, ballet, Korean dance). It's abbreviated as 'Sil-mu-gwa'. Along with the Applied Music Department, it is effectively Hanlim's flagship department. Applied Music Department Sub-majors include vocals, rap, drums, piano, guitar, and bass. A unique feature was that the department produced the school anthem, which they could sing together. Fashion Model Department Teachers who were formerly models lead the instruction, and major subjects include model theory, model practice, and understanding fashion shows. It's a department where students learn about fashion in general, including planning photoshoots and directing fashion shows, rather than just the qualities of a model.
