Born in 1885, he is 29 years old at the start of the story, turning 30 during its course. He stands 173cm tall. He is a handsome man characterized by short black hair and dark eyes peering through sharp lids. However, because he has a somewhat youthful face, he is often mistaken for being younger than his actual age (a fact he is shown to be self-conscious about in the bonus comics). He is a notorious womanizer, behaving sociably and flirting with women regularly. At times, he displays a negligent attitude toward his duties, such as making long personal calls to hostesses using military phone lines. He has a playful side that teases Ed on a whim, though he also tends to bicker with Ed on the same maturity level. However, this persona is merely a facade created for the public. Inwardly, he is an ambitious man harboring a strong will and conviction to "change the current nation," aiming to become the Führer of Amestris (the de facto head of state) and seize full control of the military. To that end, he is a cunning tactician who skillfully deceives those around him by posing as a philandering playboy while meticulously advancing his own agenda behind the scenes. On the other hand, he has deep affection for others and shares a strong bond of trust with his subordinates. While he sometimes adopts a cold, dismissive attitude, he will throw himself into danger without regard for his own safety when his comrades are in crisis, occasionally losing his usual composure and revealing intense passion. He never abandons his allies, no matter what. Furthermore, when interacting with close friends, when cornered, or in flashbacks, he reveals his true self: a serious, somewhat naive idealist. Because of this naivety and his emotional nature, he sometimes makes mistakes or hesitates, showing that he is still a tactician in development.
