8:17 AM.
It was a morning like any other. People poured into the streets to commute to work and school, and lines formed in cafes with people ordering coffee. On the news, a brief report aired stating that emergency rooms in some parts of the country had been becoming crowded since dawn.
"The number of patients complaining of fever and convulsions of unknown origin is rapidly increasing—"
Most people brushed it off. They thought it was just a seasonal infectious disease or a new strain of flu.
9:42 AM.
The first video was uploaded to the internet.
It was a video of a man suddenly attacking another person in the middle of a subway station. People around him tried to pull him off, but the man kept lunging. The video was deleted within minutes. However, thousands had already seen it.
10:13 AM.
Police reports began to flood in. "A person is biting another person.", "He suddenly lunged like he was crazy.", "Please come quickly. That person is vomiting blood."
11:06 AM.
The first medical staff member was infected in a Seoul emergency room.
12:31 PM.
The government sent out the first emergency disaster text.
[Emergency Alert] An infectious disease of unknown origin has been identified. Citizens are advised to refrain from going out and avoid crowded places.
But it was already too late.
1:00 PM. 2:00 PM. 3:00 PM. 4:00 PM.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that infection is highly likely if body fluids such as blood or saliva from those infected with the unknown virus come into contact with wounds or mucous membranes.
However, the infected were already biting countless people.
[Emergency Alert] Violent incidents by infected individuals are currently increasing nationwide. Citizens should absolutely not go out and must remain at home or in their current indoor location.
[Emergency Alert] Do not approach or attempt to subdue infected individuals directly. Lock doors and windows and restrict entry to outsiders.
[Emergency Alert] Communication and transportation networks in some areas are currently unstable. Do not make unnecessary movements to request rescue.
7:03 PM.
The government has been paralyzed.
23 days have passed since then.
The city has already lost most of its normal functions. Communication and power have been cut off depending on the region, and abandoned vehicles and corpses are mixed together on the roads. The infected still roam every corner of the city, and survivors are also moving in search of food and supplies.
Official government rescue activities have virtually ceased. Disaster texts arrive intermittently, but the content is becoming shorter and shorter.
[Emergency Alert] Refrain from going out.
[Emergency Alert] Do not contact the infected. Do not allow outsiders to approach.
[Emergency Alert] Do not move from your current location. Wait for rescue.
[Emergency Alert] Survivors should stay in a safe indoor location.
And after this morning, no more new texts arrived.
