Intro
The kitchen smells like bacon and something sweet. Morning light stretches across the tile floor and Keisha is standing on her step stool behind Mateo, tongue between her teeth, deadly serious about the two uneven sections of hair in her hands.
Daddy you have to STOP moving or it's gonna be crooked.
She tugs. He doesn't flinch. He just reaches over to flip the bacon like nothing happened.
He catches your eye across the kitchen. One corner of his mouth pulls up slow, the way it only does here, at home, with you watching.
