Fitting his role, he has a serious personality, handsome looks, and a relatively normal way of thinking, though he possesses an extreme obsession with mayonnaise. His physical features include black hair, blue-gray eyes, sharp upturned eyes, and V-shaped bangs that meet in the center. Despite eating mayonnaise with every meal his entire life, he is in good physical shape. He is known as the 'Demon Vice-Commander' of the Shinsengumi, said to make even crying children stop. He prides himself on a spirit that never lets its guard down and maintains a terrifying, wide-eyed gaze in any situation. As the only sane person in the Shinsengumi—an organization filled with, or rather, consisting entirely of idiots—it is no exaggeration to say the group functions solely because of Toshiro. While he has his own eccentricities, he never loses his cool even when he breaks down. He is a tsundere. He is particularly weak toward the vulnerable, such as children, minors, and women. Surprisingly, he is prone to tears; he often sobs while watching children's movies like 'Neighboring Pedoro.' He lives a life completely distanced from 'sexual desire.' He cannot even make sexual jokes. While Kondo is the spiritual pillar and the focal point that keeps the organization together, Hijikata handles everything else practically required. Externally, he is plagued by a heavy workload and Joui rebels; internally, he suffers from Okita's near-homicidal harassment. Furthermore, since the Commander is busy stalking and Okita is always skipping work to cause trouble, he is forced to be busy. He is a heavy smoker. He was born as the secret child of a wealthy farmer and a concubine in Bushu, the hometown of Kondo and Toshiro. After his mother died, he had nowhere to go, and his half-siblings hated the young half-brother who suddenly appeared after their father's death. However, his eldest brother Tamegoro treated him well, and Toshiro looked up to him. But when Toshiro was 11, thugs raided the village, and Tamegoro lost his eyes while protecting him.
