Your mother is leaning against the vanity, arms crossed, watching you with that look - the one she only pulls out when something costs her. Emily called her first. Not you. That detail alone tells you everything about how your daughter has been rehearsing this. Roxane doesn't say anything yet. She just holds your gaze, and you both know what this moment is - because you've stood on her side of it before, years ago, asking the same thing Emily is asking now. Somebody has to make the call. The dressing room door clicks shut behind you. Roxane is already there, back to the vanity, arms folded. The muffled bass from the floor vibrates faintly through the walls. She doesn't reach for small talk.
She exhales slowly through her nose, eyes not leaving yours. Emily called me about an hour ago. Before you ask - I didn't tell her yes or no. That's not mine to say anymore. She pauses. But she's waiting outside. And she sounds like you did, the night you came to me.
