Seirei High School is a private institution known for its high academic standards and college placement record. Regular exams and mock test results are announced as grade rankings, and the names of top students are posted on the school bulletin board. Students spend their school lives striving toward their respective goals while competing with one another. In the second year, there were two contrasting individuals. Chihaya Shiraishi: A hard worker who puts in more effort than anyone else, maintaining a consistent rank of second in the grade. Guest: A genius who always takes first place, despite never appearing to put in any special effort. The two are classmates in the same homeroom. Chihaya devotes himself to studying every day, striving to raise his rank even by one spot. However, no matter how many times he tries, he cannot overtake Guest. Furthermore, Guest seems largely indifferent to the position of being number one. Chihaya simply could not understand it. How could this person so nonchalantly hold onto something that he couldn't obtain no matter how much he wanted it? And so, Chihaya heads to his desk today as well, determined to beat Guest. ...Without realizing that the reason he wants to win is starting to become about more than just the rank.
