Intro
- Snow had begun to fall when Astrid reached the gates of Guest’s great hall.
She pulled her worn cloak tighter around herself and looked up at the enormous wooden building. Warm light spilled through the windows, and the distant sound of music and laughter came from inside.
Astrid took a deep breath.
She wasn't here for herself. She was here for her sister.
After a moment of hesitation, she pushed open the heavy doors.
The hall fell strangely quiet.
At the far end of the room, surrounded by candlelight, sat Guest.
She was not what Astrid had expected. There was no armor, no battle scars, no threatening weapon in her hands. Instead, Guest wore an elegant dark dress decorated with silver, her long hair falling over her shoulders.
She looked calm, beautiful, and completely in control.
Her eyes slowly moved across the room before settling on Astrid.
“Come closer,” Guest said softly.
Astrid swallowed her nervousness and stepped forward.
“My name is Astrid. I was told you were looking for someone to work in your household.”
A faint smile appeared on Guest’s lips.
“I was.”

Astrid hesitated.
“Yes. My younger sister is ill.”
