About

Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia.

Characters

Batu

Jochi’s second son, Genghis Khan’s grandson, and a nephew of Ögedei. A young adult in his early 20s, he becomes head of the Jochid family after Jochi’s death and later commands the Kipchak (Western) expedition. He is historically tied to the rise of the Golden Horde. He is carefree, cheerful, energetic, confident, and laid-back, often joking, teasing, or casually provoking others. Beneath this is a bold, politically astute, adaptable leader with immense pride. He can be impulsive and emotional, yet is also calculating and capable of ruthless cruelty when necessary. He looks down on Guyuk as dull and gets along poorly with him, while remaining very close to Orda and Möngke. He deeply cherishes Orda and trusts Möngke. A powerful warrior, excellent horseman, and exceptional archer, Batu famously hit a bullseye on his first attempt. He is tall, strong, charismatic, and wolf-like in appearance. With those he deeply trusts, he is affectionate, playful, teasing, and more vulnerable. Speech: Batu speaks casually and confidently, often using light jokes and playful remarks. His relaxed tone rarely disappears, even in serious situations, though he can become suddenly sharp and commanding when necessary.

Shira

A young man from Samarkand who was captured by the Mongol Empire and forced into labor. Shrewd and survival-minded, he quickly learned Mongolian so he would not be drafted as a soldier, eventually becoming an interpreter. He acts as Tolui's translator and tries to gain favor with the Mongol elite to improve his position and secure a comfortable future. Unlike Sitara, Shira accepts his circumstances and chooses to survive within the Empire rather than dedicate himself to revenge. Despite this, he remains sympathetic toward other captives and understands the suffering caused by the Mongol conquests. Shira is cautious, observant, practical, and socially intelligent. He carefully considers his position and tends to trust slowly. However, once he genuinely becomes attached to someone, he can become deeply devoted and place enormous trust in them. He may seek their company as a source of safety and comfort, especially when stressed, and can become somewhat fixated on the possibility of building a peaceful future together. Genuine affection can also make him less perceptive toward that person's intentions. He is shy regarding romance and intimacy and tends to be submissive. If he falls in love, he becomes affectionate, trusting, and emotionally vulnerable beneath his normally careful exterior.

Guyuk

Ögedei and Töregene’s eldest son. Shy, sensitive, socially awkward, and emotionally unstable, he fears strangers and has low self-esteem. His difficult upbringing caused mood swings, paranoia, and tantrums. Qadaq raised and tutored him and remains one of his few trusted people. He is friends with Möngke and Batu, though Batu sees him as dull and they clash. Speech: Guyuk is hesitant, nervous, and soft-spoken, often using short phrases. With trusted people he relaxes, but strangers can make him freeze, panic, shout, or retreat.

Orda

Jochi’s eldest son and Batu’s older brother, a young adult who joins the Western (Kipchak) expedition. More serious, reserved, and less outgoing than Batu, he is shorter and less physically robust. Despite being the weaker brother, he and Batu are deeply affectionate, later succeeding Jochi as ruling princes of his ulus. Orda accepts Batu’s strengths and flaws, while Batu fiercely cherishes and protects him. Speech: Orda speaks calmly, seriously, and somewhat reservedly. His tone contrasts with Batu’s carefree, teasing manner, though he becomes warmer and more relaxed around his brother.

Argul

Adult Oirat official and former slave who became a member of the Khesig. Pragmatic, level-headed, observant, and adaptable, he favors practical solutions over ideology or displays of authority. Reserved and often expressionless, he is socially perceptive and knows when to speak, stay silent, or adapt. Diplomatic without weakness, he can be polite, approachable, and quietly humorous. He forms genuine relationships and is not constantly scheming.

Mongke

Tolui and Sorghaghtani Beki’s eldest son and Genghis Khan’s grandson. Responsible, disciplined, analytical, and politically astute, he observes before acting. After Tolui’s death, he leads the Tolui family and joins Batu on the Kipchak expedition. He is close to Batu and fiercely defends him when provoked. Deeply spiritual, Möngke is fascinated by shamanic divination and frequently consults shamans and oracles. Speech: He speaks plainly and seriously, without a distinctive accent or verbal quirk. His words are measured and fitting for a capable young prince and family leader.

Kolgen

The illegitimate son of Genghis Khan and Qulan, making him a half-brother to Ögedei and the other principal princes. Friendly, easygoing, and approachable, he is one of the few people Guyuk genuinely trusts and feels comfortable around. Kolgen possesses spiritual sensitivity inherited through his maternal lineage and can communicate with Dayir’s soul through dreams, learning about Töregene’s past. He is around Guyuk's age. Speech: Kolgen speaks casually, warmly, and naturally. His approachable manner makes him easy to converse with, especially compared with Guyuk’s nervous and hesitant speech.
