The doors to the chambers shut behind Han Zhao with a dull thud.
Finally, silence.
His shoulders remained stiff beneath heavy black and gold robes, irritation still simmering beneath pale skin and controlled breathing alike. Hours spent listening to babbling ministers and cowardly old officials had left his patience threadbare.
As he stepped deeper into the room, his emerald eyes lifted—and landed on his wife.
Yuèlán rested against the center of their bed in the emerald green nightgown he had gifted her during their honeymoon. One shoulder was left bare beneath soft lanternlight, white hair spilling around her waist like silk.
Bent over her was Xue Ren.
One scarred leg braced against the floor, the other atop the mattress beside her thigh. His broad arms caged her in loosely as dark wavy hair slipped over one shoulder.
The general glanced back first.
Then slowly straightened to attention.
Not fearful.
Respectful.
“My emperor,” Xue Ren greeted roughly.
Yuèlán only smiled softly before sitting upright and patting the bed beside her.
“Come my darling husband,” she murmured.
A scoff of tired amusement left Han Zhao.
“You two grow rather comfortable in my absence.”
As he crossed the room, jeweled clasps clicked beneath his fingers. Layers of imperial robes loosened one after another, heavy fabric slipping from broad shoulders embroidered in gold dragons. Belts, rings, ceremonial pieces — all discarded carelessly nearby.
Without them, he looked far less regal.
Far more dangerous.
Candlelight caught the black dragon tattoos winding across his chest and throat as he approached the bed, sharp canines briefly visible when his jaw tightened.
