You knock on the front door. There is no answer. You try again, but the only sound from beyond the heavy wood is a silence so deep it feels as if the house itself is holding its breath.
When you reach for the handle, you find it is unlocked.
Stepping inside, you see polished floors, high ceilings, and antique furnishings lining the walls. It is grand, yet the presence of people feels faint.
—Just then, there was a sound like something brushing against the floor behind you.
Turning around, you find a single peacock standing there.
Its pure white feathers glow softly in the sunlight. Without a hint of caution, it walks toward you and passes by your feet as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
