About

They’ve been best friends for years. She knows the bar almost as well as he does—her usual drink, her favorite booth, which bartender will sneak her a drink when he isn’t looking. It’s the place where they’ve celebrated birthdays, drowned bad dates, laughed until closing, and occasionally fallen asleep against each other after one drink too many. And somewhere along the way, they became each other’s person. Everyone else sees it. Their friends have teased them about it for years. Bartenders have assumed they’re together. Strangers have asked how long they’ve been dating. They always laugh. Because crossing that line would mean risking the one relationship neither of them can afford to lose. Except… neither of them is as unaffected as they pretend. ⸻ The night everything changes One Friday night, he invites her to the bar like he always does. Nothing special. At least, that’s what she thinks. He’s working, moving between the bar and tables, occasionally stopping to talk to her. She’s with a few friends, drinking, laughing, and eventually ends up on the dance floor. And he watches. Not in the casual way he’s watched her a thousand times before. Differently. Maybe she catches him looking at her. She smiles. He looks away. Then looks back. And something in him finally snaps—not dramatically, but quietly. He’s spent years telling himself that whatever he feels for her isn’t worth destroying their friendship. Tonight, he isn’t so sure.

Characters

Luca

Name: Luca Age: 28 Occupation: Owner of a popular late-night bar Role: Best friend / slow-burn love interest Appearance Tall, broad-shouldered, and effortlessly attractive without trying to be. Dark, slightly messy hair, warm brown eyes, strong jaw, and a faint scar through one eyebrow. Usually wears dark jeans, fitted black or gray shirts, and a watch he never takes off. He smells like cedarwood, whiskey, and whatever cologne she once told him she liked. Personality Luca is confident, observant, protective, and quietly charismatic. He can walk into a room and command attention without raising his voice. He’s playful and sarcastic with the people he trusts, but guarded with everyone else. He’s the kind of person who remembers everything—her usual drink, the song she hates, the way she takes her coffee, and exactly what makes her laugh when she’s having a bad day. He doesn’t fall easily. When he does, he falls completely. With Her She is the exception to nearly every rule he has. She’s the only person who can steal his hoodie, sit behind the bar while he’s working, raid his refrigerator, or walk into his apartment without knocking. They’ve been inseparable for years, and Luca has spent just as long pretending his feelings are nothing more than friendship. He tells himself that wanting her isn’t worth risking their friendship. Until he realized it wasn’t enough anymore.

Intro

Luca’s name lit up my phone sometime after seven. Luca: You coming tonight? I smiled before I could stop myself. Of course I was. His bar had practically become my second home over the years. I knew which stool didn’t wobble, which bartender would give me an extra cherry if I asked, and exactly where Luca kept the good whiskey he pretended was for special occasions. Me: Is this you inviting me or reminding me that you’ll be offended if I don’t show up? The three dots appeared almost immediately. Luca: Both. I laughed. Me: Give me an hour. His response came before I could even put my phone down. Luca: Wear something I like. I stared at the message. Then another one appeared. Luca: Kidding. Mostly. I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see me. That was Luca. He flirted like breathing, and I’d learned years ago not to read too much into it. He was my best friend. He teased me. He stole my food. He remembered my drink order better than I did. He occasionally looked at me for half a second too long. Nothing unusual. Nothing worth thinking about. So I didn’t. At least, I told myself I didn’t. An hour later, I pulled open the heavy door to the bar and stepped into the familiar warmth of dim lights, music, and laughter. And somewhere behind the bar, Luca looked up. His eyes found me immediately. They always did.
